PLEASE NOTE THAT TIMES AND LOCATIONS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE UNTIL THE RELEASE OF THE INFOPACK
On Friday, come to warm up with the first of our socials with a “represent your scene” theme at the University of York. This is an occasion to meet new and old friends and be welcomed by our committee. On Saturday and Sunday join us in one of our three amazing streams!
Doesn’t matter if you just started or if you are a seasoned dancer, there is a stream for everyone with our Hoppers, Boppers and Whiz-whoppers!
Saturday evening, be ready for an evening full of live music and performances, including our very own Grande Olde Troupe. Also featuring our biggest band so far at Whip-ma… The Blind Tigers! Plus, a new special entry: a blues afterparty with live music with the fantastic Elsie Franklin!
On Sunday afternoon, we will be finishing our event with a big Tea Dance, and the theme is ‘Birthday Party’.
Culture and History of Swing Dance will also not be missing during this weekender. Following their success in Jorvik, we will be again giving attendees the platform to discuss these topics.
Don't miss your chance to join us for a superb return for Whip-ma's 10th anniversary! Don’t wait long, tickets will be selling fast!
STREAMS
The weekender has three streams available, two lindy-hop and one solo jazz, so you can choose the best fit for you!
While we offer an idea of the years of experience that you should have for each stream, we recognize that is an average indication depending on how often you go to classes and social dancing. If you are in doubt about which stream is the best for you, make sure to be confident in the moves and descriptions enlisted for each stream. We want to make sure you have the best learning experience out of it! If you are still in doubt, send us a message! :)
HOPPERS (beginners): You are at the beginning of your swing journey and you are looking forward to learning more! Designed for dancers who have just started or have around 1 year of experience, this stream is a great opportunity for you to learn some tips and tricks of social dancing as well as better practise the moves you have learned already. You may have confidence with moves such as a tuck-turn, send-out and pass-by but are still eager to see what else is out there! You might have tried both 6- and 8-count footwork but aren't yet confident playing between the two.
BOPPERS (intermediates): You have been dancing for at least 1 or 2 years. You are a seasoned dancer in your home scene and have started to go to weekends around your area. You know moves in 6 and 8 counts and you may be confident in mixing them to fit the rhythm. You are ready to experiment with new moves and some variations. You are confident with moves such as swing outs and lindy circles, and you are looking to refine your style.
WHIZ-WHOPPERS (solo jazz): If you hear the music, you can’t stop yourself. You are a seasoned dancer, with at least 2 years experience, and feel comfortable playing with rhythms and musicality. If there is a routine you are always in the first line, whether it is the Mama Stew, Shim Sham, Tranky Doo or maybe even a Big Apple! You have a good vocabulary of solo jazz moves, and you look to learn how to improvise and express yourself best. If you feel instead that you've danced for a while, but this would be your first proper introduction to solo jazz, fear not! Good enthusiasm goes a long way, but please keep in mind this stream is particularly aimed at intermediate/advanced dancers so we expect confident dancers.
SOCIAL DANCING
At the University of York Swing Dance scene, we regularly rotate partners throughout the class. We invite you to be friendly and understanding of other people regardless of their chosen dance role (lead/follow).
If you prefer to stay with one person, please inform our teachers or a member of the committee on the day.
SOCIALS
If you are only interested in socials you will find social-only tickets for our three socials on Friday night, Saturday night, and our tea dance on Sunday afternoon. Please note that all our weekend passes include access to all socials, so you do NOT need to purchase both.
SUPPORT THE EVENT
We aim to keep our prices low to make sure all our events are accessible to everyone, regardless of financial situation. If you are in a position to do so, then please consider donating to the society and supporting our mission.
