Join us on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th of October for two days full of classes, swing and joy!

Inspired by the Viking name of York, we will celebrate in full Viking style!

Jorvik is a beginner friendly weekender with 4 hours of classes on the Saturday, followed by a Halloween themed social dance at Millthorpe School in the evening. This will be followed by 4 hours of historically inspired tasters on Sunday and then a tea dance!

New for this year, we are introducing a cultural talk on the Saturday on the history of lindy hop and the African-American culture. Furthermore, on Sunday, we will be introducing our new interactive discussion group on community and inclusivity in the swing dance scene in the north of England! This is part of our broad theme on culture and history.

STREAMS

The weekender has two streams available so you can choose the best fit for you!

BEGINNER: You have just started swing dancing and you are looking forward to learning more! This stream is designed for dancers who have less than six months swing dance experience. This stream is a great opportunity for you to learn some tips and tricks of social dancing as well as better practise the moves you have learned already. Beginners may have confidence with swing dance moves such as a tuck-turn, send-out and pass-by but are looking forward to building on that confidence and seeing what else is out there!

INTERMEDIATE: You have been dancing for at least six months and you are more comfortable with social dancing, even if this may be your first weekender! You know moves in 6 and 8 counts and you are ready to experiment with new moves and some variations. You probably know signature moves as swing out, lindy circle and you are looking to refine your style.

At the University of York Swing Dance scene, we regularly rotate partners throughout the class. We invite you to be friendly and understanding with other people regardless of the dance role (Lead/Follow) they choose.

If you prefer to stay with one person, please inform our teachers on the day or a member of the committee.

SOCIALS

If you are only interested in socials you will find a ticket just to attend the Saturday night with live band and our signature tea dance on Sunday. Whilst prices have been retained from last year’s Jorvik, we have for the social dances introduced a SUPPORTER TICKET, this is so that those of you who can pay more can make it easier for those who cannot, and this will help us to keep our events accessible!

BOOKING AND CANCELLATION POLICY

  • When you tell us you wish to cancel at least 7 days before the event,  we’ll refund your ticket minus the payment processing fee.
  • When you cancel less than 7 days before the event, we will refund your ticket minus the payment processing fee if we are able to re-sell the ticket to another
  • dancer.
  • If you wish to donate your ticket to another dancer, you have to contact the society at least 24 hours before the event. If you give your ticket to someone else, they can not request another stream or role different to what is assigned in the ticket.
